OEM Project Story

From a Simple Question to a Long-Term OEM Partnership

Our OEM journey often starts in unexpected ways.

We initially worked with Chris as a golf cart battery dealer partner. Over more than two years of cooperation, we built a strong and trusting relationship through consistent communication and reliable product performance.

One day, Chris reached out with a new question. He asked whether we could design a compact lithium battery for solar-powered streetlight backup power. Our answer was straightforward: as a professional battery manufacturer, this was well within our capabilities.

After reviewing the application and dimensional requirements, we recommended a compact 12V 50Ah lithium battery as a suitable option. During our discussion, Chris mentioned that the battery only needed to operate for approximately three years, after which replacement would be acceptable.

We responded honestly: our standard lithium cells are designed for significantly longer service life, typically five years or more and our golf cart batteries are engineered for up to ten years of use.

We then made a candid suggestion: if a three-year lifespan was sufficient and the technical requirements were minimal, a readily available product from Amazon could be a more cost-effective and convenient choice.

Chris agreed. More importantly, he understood that we were fully capable of manufacturing lithium batteries for solar and off-grid applications.

Some time later, Chris came back with good news. He told us,
“I have a partner working on a mobile solar cart project, and they’re looking for high-quality, long-life lithium batteries for new vehicle installations.”

This was clearly within our core expertise.

With only basic requirements provided voltage, capacity, and dimensional constraints we developed a custom battery solution. Drawing on our prior experience with similar product, the project progressed smoothly.

We delivered three sample units, which were installed and tested in real-world operation with excellent results.

During one of our regular visits, Chris introduced us to his partner, John, the owner responsible for operations and sales.

John showed us his facility, where hundreds of carts filled the yard, some already carrying Chris’s branded vehicles. His business operated nationwide, complete with advanced GPS tracking systems.

His goal was clear: within a year, he planned to convert his entire fleet to lithium power.

John walked us through the installation process, operating conditions, and performance expectations. We reviewed the real-world usage scenarios in detail and discussed mounting bracket design and battery surface layout at his facility.

After returning, we worked closely with our engineering team to refine the solution.

We advised John that his application focused on energy storage and off-grid charging did not require the high discharge currents typical of golf cart propulsion. Using high-discharge cells would increase cost without adding real value.

Instead, we proposed a more cost-effective configuration optimized for his actual operating profile.

John appreciated the transparency and adopted our recommendation.

He placed an initial 50-unit trial order, which performed exceptionally well in service. Confident in the results, he later committed to a follow up order of nearly 200 battery systems, completing the fleet conversion smoothly by year end.

Throughout the project, John also shared insights into his GPS hardware more advanced and more expensive than our current modules, but a valuable optional upgrade for certain customers.

What began as a straightforward golf cart battery partnership evolved into a successful OEM project through trust, honest communication, and application-driven engineering.

We are grateful for Chris’s continued trust and referrals, and for the opportunity to support John’s growing business.

The growth of HIO Battery is built on partnerships like these where good service, technical integrity, and long-term thinking lead to unexpected and rewarding opportunities.
