What’s the difference between lithium and lead-acid batteries? / Why switch to lithium?

Installation
Can I install the battery myself at home?
Yes, but please read the manual before installation. If you need assistance or are unsure about the installation process, always seek professional help to avoid accidental battery damage.
Can I splice different connectors on the AC side of the charger?
We do not recommend modifying our chargers in any way. We offer a variety of cart-specific charging ports to facilitate easy installation of our chargers and batteries.
Do I need to replace the battery cables when installing an HIO Battery?
Replacement with new or larger cables may be recommended based on the cart’s age, condition, and configuration:
● Replace cables if they show signs of aging or corrosion.
● Larger cables are highly recommended if you’ve upgraded your cart with larger tires, additional seats, increased load capacity, a higher-amperage controller, a larger motor, or any modifications that increase current draw.
What parts are needed to convert a golf cart to lithium power?
Required parts include:
● HIO Battery lithium battery
● Battery charger
● LCD monitor
● Voltage converter (if your cart has lights or a stereo and no existing converter)
● Basic hand tools

Can I add a backup battery to increase Ah capacity?
Not currently, but it may be available in the future. Customers are our top priority-we’ll do our best to meet all reasonable needs you may have.
How to install the HIO Battery? (Detailed Version)
1. Remove the seat, turn off the cart with the key, and switch the cart to tow mode.
2. Take a photo of the existing battery installation for reference.
3. Disconnect and remove the lead-acid batteries.
4. Ensure the HIO battery’s power button is in the off position (no blue light).
5. Attach the mounting brackets to the underside of the commercial battery, with the slot side down and facing away from the battery.
6. Position the battery in the tray, ensuring the main positive and negative cables can reach the battery terminals. You may need to adjust the brackets for a proper fit. Note: If cables are too short, longer cables must be purchased. If cables are cracked or rusted, replacement is highly recommended.
7. Secure the other side of the mounting brackets to the golf cart frame using the provided hardware.
8. Connect the 48V positive cables to the red terminal and 48V negative cables to the black terminal, then tighten. Note: Do not connect 12V accessories (horn, lights, etc.) directly to the battery. 12V accessories must be connected to a 48V to 12V step-down converter.
9. Press the power button (blue light illuminates) and switch the cart to run mode.
10. Verify that accessories (lights, horn, etc.) are functioning properly.
11. Replace the seat and confirm the cart operates in forward and reverse.
12. Download the HIO Battery E-BMS app and connect to the battery.
13. Plug in the HIO charger and confirm charging. A positive amp reading on the left side of the screen indicates charging (initial current is typically 10A to 15A). Always charge the battery to 100% (steady green light) before first use.
14. The battery is fully charged when the charger’s green light remains steady (not blinking) and the app shows 100%. Unplug the charger at this point.
Usage
I just received my battery system! How do I get Bluetooth setup help and check if the battery is charging?
Search for the "E-BMS" app on your smartphone and install it. Open the app, enable Bluetooth access, and choose to register an account or use guest mode to access the main interface. The interface displays charging status to confirm if the battery is charging. For more information you can go through the User Manual or the Bluetooth introduction interface on our website
How many rounds of golf can I play with an HIO lithium battery?
Runtime varies by course terrain. Typical performance:
● 54Ah capacity: 27-33 holes, including travel to and from the course
● 105Ah capacity: 54 holes, including travel to and from the course
Does the State of Charge (SOC) monitor need calibration?
No. But If the battery has been stored for extended periods, perform a full charge cycle to calibrate it.(full charge cycle: charge to 80%-100% is ok, but there can't be any discharging during it )
Can the battery be overcharged or over-discharged?
Our batteries feature a built-in BMS that prevents overcharging and over-discharging. Even so, best practice is to use a lithium-compatible charger and avoid repeated deep discharges.
What is the maximum current of the golf cart battery?
Latest data: The built-in 200A BMS supports continuous 200A discharge, 400A for 35 seconds, and 600A for 3 seconds (laboratory data). Our supplier’s field tests confirm actual support for 300A discharge for 180 seconds.
*Is a 48V to 12V converter required?
It is recommended. Note: Do not connect 12V accessories (horn, lights, etc.) directly to the battery. All 12V accessories must be connected to a 12V step-down converter.
Can the battery work with high-amperage controllers?What's the size it supports?
Yes, it works with controllers from 250A to 440A. For longer runtime, go with a higher-capacity battery.

Charging
What power cord should I use to charge the HIO Battery?
Recommended extension cord specifications:
● Up to 15ft (≈4.6m): 12-14 AWG
● Up to 25ft (≈7.6m): 10-12 AWG
● Extension cords over 25ft are not recommended
For optimal performance, use an HIO Battery dedicated extension cord.
Must I use the HIO Battery dedicated charger? Can I use other chargers?
It would be better to use the original one of our brands. Our batteries and chargers are designed to work together. Using third-party chargers or battery tenders may damage the battery or golf cart and void the warranty.
How long does it take to charge the battery?
A simple way to calculate charge time: Divide the total Ah capacity of the battery pack by the charger’s amp rating. Example: A 105Ah battery with a 18A charger takes approximately 5.83 hours to fully charge from 0%. Charging from 50% takes ~2.92 hours, from 75% takes ~1.46 hours, and from 25% takes ~4.38 hours. In the same way, if a 105Ah battery with a 12A charger takes approximately 8.75 hours to fully charge from 0%.
Can the battery be overcharged for any reason?
Both our chargers and batteries feature built-in monitoring systems to prevent overcharging. Therefore, we only recommend using the compatible charger.
Can I leave the lithium battery on the charger overnight?
Yes-if the charger is lithium-specific and stops charging once full. Additionally, avoid repeated charging in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
*How low can I drain the battery before recharging?
HIO batteries are not recommended to be discharged below 20%. Recharge to 100% if continuing use; but do not fully charge for long-term storage.
How often should I charge the battery?
Charge the battery after each use. Unplug from the cart once the charger’s green light remains steady.

Yes, the battery comes with a charger and other compatible accessories. Chargers can be purchased separately if damaged outside the warranty period.
Does the display screen come with a mounting bracket for the golf cart dashboard?
Yes, a bracket is included. You can secure it to the top of the dashboard with screws.
How much does the battery weigh? Do I need to add counterweight to the golf cart?
Battery weight ranges from 71lbs to 157lbs depending on the model. Refer to the corresponding specification sheet for details. Add counterweight as needed based on actual weight requirements.
Can lithium batteries be installed in old golf carts?
Yes. Our lithium batteries are true "Drop-In-Ready" for golf carts—same size as your existing lead-acid batteries, allowing conversion in less than 30 minutes.
Is the charger waterproof?
Yes. The HIO charger is designed for wall mounting or direct on-cart installation—it can withstand tooutdoor elements like splashes and works fine in rainy weather. However, don’t go submerging it in water on purpose—that’s dangerous.

How are batteries shipped?
● If your dealer doesn’t have the battery in stock or is not local, the battery will typically be palletized and shipped via truck freight.
● There may be additional fees if exists such as residential deliveries or if a liftgate is required for unloading.

Can batteries be shipped via UPS or FedEx service?
Yes. Except they exceed the 150lb weight limit and must be shipped via Less Than Truckload (LTL) freight. Per regulations: "Fully regulated hazardous materials packages in domestic U.S. service must not exceed 150 lbs gross weight."
Can batteries be shipped via Less Than Truckload (LTL) freight?
Yes. All HIO Battery lithium batteries have undergone comprehensive testing and meet shipping standards, with the UN3480 shipping code (battery pack). However, you must hold hazmat certification and use proper labels and documentation for shipping. Contact HIO Battery with any questions.

What is a BMS? What does it do, and why is it important?
A Battery Management System (BMS) is an electronic control system that monitors the operation of rechargeable batteries (individual cells or packs), protects the battery pack, and balances cell states. Its functions include: preventing operation beyond safe parameters (e.g., monitoring voltage and temperature, preventing overcharge/over-discharge); real-time battery status monitoring to optimize performance and lifespan; secondary data calculation and feedback; and regulating the battery’s operating environment. Thanks to the BMS, your battery remains safe and reliable.
What protection functions does the BMS offer?
Protection functions include:

Maintenance
Do HIO Battery lithium batteries require maintenance?
While all things—whether people, objects, health, or relationships—benefit from care, HIO Battery only requires minimal, simple maintenance—no special or complex upkeep is needed, and no watering is required.

How to store a lithium golf cart battery? How long can the battery be stored without charging?
Before storage:
● Charge to 50%-70% capacity
● Unplug the charger
● Turn off the battery via the power button or disconnect all the ports with cables
While storage:
● Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
● Keep away from freezing or extremely hot areas
● Check or top up the charge every 6 months
Can I pressure wash the battery?
Although the battery is well-sealed, pressure washing is not recommended under any circumstances. Pressure washing may cause premature damage, which is not covered under warranty. Recommended cleaning method for all batteries: Wipe only with a damp cloth to reduce the risk of damaging the battery or other electronic components in the battery compartment. Never use any chemical cleaners on the battery.
Can the battery operate in cold temperatures?
Our batteries can discharge down to approximately -4°F (-20°C) but cannot charge below 32°F (0°C).
Will HIO Battery runtime decrease in extreme cold temperatures?
Yes, runtime will be reduced in extreme cold.
Can I use HIO Battery in extreme hot temperatures?
Yes. Our batteries have been tested in ambient temperatures exceeding 115°F (46°C) and can be used in extreme heat. Do not expose them to temperatures above 149°F (65°C).

What is the typical lifespan of a lithium battery?
With proper use, the battery is expected to last 10+ years. Additionally, good charging habits and proper storage can further extend its lifespan.

Warranty
What is the warranty period for HIO Batteries?
HIO provides a 10-year limited warranty for its LiFePO4 batteries. For 10 years from the date of sale (per the buyer’s receipt), the warranty covers manufacturing defects as long as the battery is not damaged by human factors. Simply provide the required documentation, and we will issue a prepaid return label. After you return the battery, you can choose between a full refund or a replacement. Additionally, HIO offers a 1-year limited warranty for all accessories, including chargers, fuel gauges, voltage reducers, and other components.
What information do I need to provide to file a warranty claim? How to submit a limited warranty claim?
To submit a Limited Warranty claim, please contact the original place of purchase, or visit hiobattery.com/s/warranty-claim. The Battery may be required to be shipped back to HIO Battery for further inspection. A RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) must be obtained from HIO Battery before any Battery may be returned. Any Battery that arrives without a RMA will be refused and any and all shipping charges will be the sole responsibility of the buyer. The RMA must be clearly marked on the outside of the shipment, or it will be refused.
Does the warranty cover labor costs and round-trip shipping fees?
Yes. But the cost of shipping and packaging to send the Battery to HIO for warranty evaluation shall be the sole responsibility of the buyer first. Any Battery deemed defective in material or workmanship shall, subject to buyer’s election to have it repaired or replaced and buyer’s payment of any amounts owed to HIO as provided above, be repaired or replaced, and returned to the buyer with HIO paying the cost of shipping. However, if the issue is deemed not covered under warranty (e.g., due to accidental damage, improper use and so on), the customer will be responsible for the shipping fees.

What to do if the battery drains quickly?
First, check internal power connection screws and cables to ensure screws are tight and cables are undamaged and free of corrosion. If nothing wrong can be found, contact us as soon as possible.
Why doesn’t the golf cart show battery charge after connecting the battery?
Ensure the meter/gauge is securely connected to the RS485 port. If the connection is secure but the issue persists, contact the after-sales service center.
